UP alliance on table of Congress as quartet works for bailou

A potential partnership is being worked out between the Samajwadi party and the UPA. This is being supervised by the group consisting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Amar Singh and national security adviser M.K. Narayanan. A shape of the relationship was seen emerging after a 50 minute meeting of the leaders of the Samajwadi party, Amar Singh and Ram Gopal Yadav, with Narayanan.

Both the sides had wanted reasonable terms for a durable alliance. This would also ensure that the UPA government would be able to finish its term. But the leaders of the Congress party believe that this can only be possible if the Samajwadi party can be inducted to give support to the government. Even as this statement was made there were rumours of the unconditional outside support being provided to the party by the leaders Mulayam and Amar Singh. The Congress move the table with ground rules which included the key ministries like defence, finance, home and external affairs would remain with the Congress and were non negotiable. Also the strategic partnership would no be restricted to the parliament but would also culminate into a poll alliance particularly in UP where the parties would need support from each other. No portfolios would be demanded by the Samajwadi Party based on their strength as the UPA had already allotted berths as per the number of MP’s in the party.

The council has already been stretched as per the limit permitted by the Indian constitution with 79 ministers out of the 80 permitted. The Congress also added that maximum of 4 leaders from the Samajwadi party as the allies could not take away ministers only MP’s could be told for the same. A committee headed by A.K Antony said that the principle of one person per post could lead to the doubling of ministers as the functionaries of Congress may be asked to shed one post.

The Samajwadi party should reduce their unrealistically high demands as per the expectations of the Congress Party. This is especially for the main portfolios and getting friends bailed out from problems. The general secretary also added that the coalition government has to last till the end of the term. At the moment the Congress plans to defer the monsoon session to the 11th of August instead of convenes in the third week of July for getting a trust vote. After this a motion of no confidence cannot be moved for a period of 6 months and this will also provide the government ample time to clear the nuclear deal without fears of not finishing their terms.

The left party is absolutely out of the scheme of the Congress and they are aiming for a damage control mission so that they can deflate the acuity of the party working at cross purposes for the Samajwadi deal. Both Sonia Gandhi and Amar Singh had been in the deal from the beginning with Rahul Gandhi in stride.
